Turbulent August: Ether ETFs Struggle, Bitcoin Mining Hits Record Lows, and Toncoin Falls Amid Telegram CEO's Arrest

Since the debut of spot Ether ETFs on July 23, 2024, the Ether market has faced a series of challenges. Liquidity in Ether trading pairs dropped significantly, with the U.S. centralized exchanges seeing a 20% decline, reducing market depth to approximately $14 million. Offshore venues also experienced a 19% drop, leaving them with about $10 million in liquidity. This reduction in liquidity has made the market more sensitive to large orders, contrasting with the Bitcoin market, which saw an increase in liquidity following the launch of its spot exchange-traded funds.

Adding to Ether's woes, over $500 million has flowed out of Ether ETFs since their launch. The price of Ether has also fallen sharply by more than 25%, reaching a low of $2,380. Market conditions, coupled with the typically slow summer season, have been cited as key reasons for this decline in interest and liquidity.

Amid the recent market downturn, JPMorgan reported that Bitcoin mining profitability hit record lows in August, with miners earning an average of $43,600 per exahash per second in daily block rewards. This marked the lowest figure on record, significantly down from a peak of $342,000 in November 2021 when Bitcoin was priced at $60,000. Bitcoin's total market capitalization for the 14 U.S.-listed bitcoin mining companies tracked by the bank also declined by 15%. Despite a temporary surge in transaction fees, the network’s hashrate rose by 16 exahashes per second to 631 exahashes, increasing competition among miners. The report highlighted the difficult environment, as mining difficulty increased by 9%, putting additional pressure on profitability.

In addition to the struggles in the Bitcoin and Ether markets, August saw Toncoin (TON) suffer a sharp decline of 14.5%. The drop followed the arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov in France, as confirmed by French media outlets. Durov was arrested at Le Bourget Airport after a warrant was issued by OFIM, a division of the French National Police. The warrant was based on accusations that Telegram's lack of moderation enabled crimes such as drug trafficking, distribution of child sexual abuse material (CSAM), and fraud. Durov’s arrest raised serious concerns among investors, leading to Toncoin’s sharp decline as French authorities accused him of being complicit in these illegal activities due to Telegram’s alleged failure to cooperate with law enforcement.
